What begins with a falling birthday cake soon spirals into a highly suspicious case. That’s the premise of Smoke into a Puddle, a story I wrote and illustrated after being given the theme: “a surprise birthday party.” As you can probably tell, I didn’t care much about the birthday itself, it merely became a pretext to dive into classic film noir and the kind of mystery-driven storytelling I love.
